Our Mission
The vision of Baphumelele is to provide a temporary shelter for vulnerable/orphaned children and young adults with chronic diseases and HIV/AIDS, and to provide skills development for the unemployed, early childhood care, alleviation of poverty, and healthcare information to the community in Khayelitsha and surroundings, so that the lives of everyone we touch can become more productive and accepted individuals who make a difference within society.
Learn More
Founded in 1989 by the visionary Mama Rosie, Baphumelele is proud to have been serving its community for over three decades. Our numerous initiatives aim to address some of the most serious and pervasive issues in our home of Khayelitsha, including the largest HIV/AIDS epidemic in the world, an increasing population of orphaned/vulnerable children, and an unemployment rate that stands at a staggering 54.1% or higher. But with the dedication and hard work of so many people — social workers, caregivers, support staff, volunteers, and more — Baphumelele is making a real impact on these issues and changing lives every single day.
